What is a PLY file?

PLY (Polygon File Format, sometimes called the Stanford Triangle Format) came out of 3D scanning research. It supports both ASCII and binary encodings and can carry arbitrary per-vertex properties such as colour, transparency and confidence values, which is why scanners and photogrammetry tools favour it.

What is a STEP file?

STEP (ISO 10303) is the universal CAD interchange format, read by SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Onshape, FreeCAD, CATIA and every CAM package. Unlike a mesh format it describes a true solid body built from bounded surfaces, which is why manufacturers and machine shops almost always ask for it.

What is preserved in the conversion

The complete triangle mesh is carried across — every vertex and every face, at the original coordinates and scale, with no decimation or re-meshing. Important: this produces a FACETED solid — each triangle of the mesh becomes one flat CAD face. It is a genuine STEP solid that opens in SolidWorks, Fusion 360, FreeCAD and Onshape, and you can measure it, section it and run boolean operations on it. What it is NOT is parametric CAD: a cylinder arrives as hundreds of flat facets rather than one round surface, and there is no feature history to edit. Turning a mesh back into clean parametric surfaces needs reverse-engineering software, and no free browser converter does it — including the ones that imply otherwise.

Is there a file size limit?
